History of the classic Prince of Persia game

The Prince of Persia upon it's original release in the late 1980s was seen by many as a huge leap forward using animation within a video game. A technique known as rotoscoping was used to ensure that the characters moved as fluidly as possible through the gaming environments. The combat method was also different then in many games of the era. In Prince of Persia the characters fought using swords instead of projectiles, which was the usually method of dispatching enemies back then. In many ways the game broke into new territory. Development and Inspiration for the Prince of Persia game

According to WikiPedia the Prince of Persia video game drew inspiration from several sources. Development for the game began in 1985, the year Jordan Mechner graduated from Yale University. At that time, Mechner had already developed one game, Karateka, for distributor Broderbund. Despite expecting a sequel to Karateka, the distributor gave Mechner creative freedom to create an original game. The game drew from several sources of inspiration beyond video games, including literature such as the Arabian Nights stories, and films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Mechner used an animation technique called rotoscoping, with which he used footage to animate the characters' sprites and movements. To create the protagonist's platforming motions, Mechner traced video footage of his younger brother running and jumping in white clothes.
